Manipulation Under Anesthesia

The incinerator and the strategy of the ostrich

I think, once again, the political debate on the incinerator is fed by the center city with strokes of slogans, requests for reference, not across the board. "But stop," is the cry of war, but we can not stand still, because our landfills are started exhaustion, not because we want to export waste, because we believe that Trent to make more modern and competitive new solutions are needed and updated. Sure, it's easier to lift the cloud of dust, launch alternative ideas, pretending not to know that our province would be little or no effect. Is it more difficult to find real solutions and produce concrete proposals, so as not to postpone the problems for our children, so as not to condemn the emergence of Trentino (Napoli remember?) Not many years. I believe that people are asking us to decide and not to leave the field as soon as the match becomes complicated. Besides, who now calls into question a decision that we should give as already acquired, moves the debate from real issues. That is: choosing the best available technology to minimize environmental impacts, identification of compensation by the elimination of other sources of pollution, the optimal landscaping.
Moreover, it seems strange that the party at national level in Italy are reporting the nuclear expresses its opposition to terrorism by the waste incinerator and branding the project as anachronistic. We forget perhaps that landfills are now reality in developing countries and, on the contrary, the facilities for thermal treatment of waste were invented by the countries of northern Europe who first moved in the direction of the collection. No coincidence that the technological innovation in the field of energy plants has made great strides, especially with regard to the abatement of smoke. Suffice it to say that British Environment Agency estimates say that emissions of dioxins from 35 tons of fireworks "shot" during the celebrations for the millennium in London are equivalent to those that the incinerator would produce in London 120 years (Source: Environment Agency 2000).
final consideration. Someone has lost the opportunity to make easy and unnecessary sarcasm when I said that we must think not only for waste disposal over the next twenty years (20 years, as the average age of an incinerator), but also beyond. Instead it seems to me very, very serious, because I know the incubation times of complex initiatives such as these. If then the construction of a facility of this type should involve not only hundreds of municipalities, but also the two provinces, then the game would be even more difficult. This should not lead us to bury our heads in the sand hoping that things aggiustino itself. The strategy of the ostrich, in my opinion, has never led to anything good.
